AdNags Revenge

The lastest USA
TODAY/Gallup poll
should have John McCain flying high.

The Friday-Sunday poll, mostly conducted as Obama was returning from his much-publicized overseas trip and released just this hour, shows McCain now ahead 49%-45% among voters that Gallup believes are most likely to go to the polls in November. In late June, he was behind among likely voters, 50%-44%.

No, not just the numbers, but how competitive this race is. On George W. Bush’s failed presidency alone, the Democrat should be winning by a mile.

On the end of Obama’s rousing European tour, which was a success by any measure, but… no one is yet completely convinced. People are still asking: Who is this guy? From a distance just won’t do it.

It is a question that has hovered over Senator Barack Obama even as he has
passed milestone after milestone in his race for the White House: Why is he
not doing better?

It shadowed him as he struggled against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in
many states through the primaries, results that sometimes stood at odds with
the huge, enthusiastic crowds that turned out to see him. It was there in
the exit polls that suggested that many Democrats were uncomfortable with
Mr. Obama, putting an asterisk next to some of his biggest primary victories.

And it is back again as he returns from an overseas trip that even Republicans
have described as politically triumphant….

Where’s
the Bounce?

Sorry to nag, but they don’t seem to be getting the message.

Oh, and if you don’t get the headline of this post you need to catch
up on your summer reading
.

What Obama needs is some good old fashion gravity, a tug to bring him back down to earth. You know, like a townhall meeting where he screws up badly. That would likely help Obama at this point.

See, for those who haven’t been paying attention, American voters don’t cheer for the champ or the smarty pants who seems full of himself, no matter how right, no matter how good the policies he’s pushing. The do-gooder who can do no wrong. See Gore 2000, or Kerry. We’re underdog lovers. We don’t like the guy above it all. We like the one who’s down in it, imperfect, you know, like William Jefferson Clinton. That’s where McCain is getting his political life preserver. From the people who like to root for
the sinner or the under-achiever. You know, someone like them.
