Michelle Obama: Taking Cues from Laura Bush

18 June 2008 11:11 am by Taylor Marsh

Ah yes, the demure, muted Laura Bush. Can’t have an outspoken feminist female
as first lady now can we. Stereotypes prevail, especially for first ladies. You could see this one coming a mile away.

Let the makeover begin. “Be good,” said Barack to his wife. Michelle
Obama on “The View”
today began the job, though it should be said
that according to MSNBC, Mrs. Obama has a 9-point approval advantage over Cindy
McCain.

First, it helps a lot that Michelle Obama is gorgeous. But her hair and makeup
were flawless today. The black and white floral dress was a knock out, very
feminine. Stephanie Cutler has come in to help with her image and such, but
it’s clear they’ve been thinking about this for a while. Ever since her statement
that for the first time she’s “really proud” of her country exploded, which sent me around the twist. To say that this
first entry into the American political scene wasn’t helpful is an understatement
of monumental proportions.

Segue to the gentler, softer side of Michelle Obama.

“It’s fun to look pretty.” – Michelle Obama

Any woman would agree. Mrs. Obama accomplished that and more today.

Secondly, she’s a very smart woman, very smart. She obviously understands what’s
at stake and what her previous performances, especially on her “really proud of my country” catastrophe, could cause, not only her husband, but the entire Democratic Party.

“The View” provided exactly what Michelle Obama needed, including a chance to give a nod to Hillary.

“People aren’t used to strong women…. There are times people don’t
even know how to talk about them. … Hillary Clinton has created 18 million
cracks. … But she’s taken them so my girls, when they come along, won’t
have to take it. …” – Michelle Obama on “The View”

As for picking Clinton as vice president, which Walters asked, “I’m
just glad I’ll have nothing to do with it,”
replied Mrs. Obama. She
also stated that the nominee has earned the right to pick the best person for
the position.

Radio open thread. Mrs. Obama will be a main topic today, as will Obama picking former Clinton administration foreign policy experts for his team.
