Reading this
column by Tumulty today, it reminds me of the health care forum in Las Vegas
where Hillary Clinton cleaned the other candidates’ clocks. I wasn’t a Hillary
supporter back then, but simply giving credit where it was due. During this
event, once Clinton came on stage, instead of sitting politely next to Ms. Tumulty,
Hillary stood up, then walked the stage to make her case to the audience. This
meant that most of the event Tumulty had the view of Clinton’s back.
By asking "What Does Hillary Want?", Tumulty once again reveals how
dense the traditional media is about Clinton’s motives. She’s got one: to win.
That Tumulty, like so many others, are ignoring Clinton’s only goal, which
is to make the case to SuperDs that she would be the best nominee
against John McCain, the traditional media, as well as the Obama blogs, are
missing one of the greatest political dramas ever to unfold, second only to the 2000 election.
Clinton is campaigning on counting every single vote. But also that every Democratic
delegate should be focused on who can win in November.
Obama is campaign on disenfranchising voters so he can win, regardless of whether
he’s got the strongest case for November, which he does not.
Delegates should be thinking about one thing and one thing only and it’s not
the rules. It’s who can beat John McCain. Hillary Clinton has the clearest path,
the easier route, with the states she’s already won as proof. Obama, on the
other hand, would have to rely on an unproven strategy at a time when his candidacy
is losing steam, just as hers is building.
So Ms. Tumulty, get a clue. Clinton doesn’t want the vice presidency. She’s
shooting for the top job. She wants to be the Democratic nominee for president
in 2008. Are you hearing me now?
