Obama on Fox
BY TAYLOR MARSH
He accepted.
He showed up.
He didn’t take them on.
I’m shocked! Shocked, I say. Obama played politics with Fox! He
showed up then played nice. Excuse
me, but duh! He even touted Ronald Reagan, for good measure. How very Obama.
As I’ve said many times before, with Clinton’s horrendous coverage, I long ago made an unrestful peace with Fox “News,” taking good coverage where we can get it.
But it’s been Obama’s supporters touting that he would not go on Fox, even as he was caught on tape telling Bill-O he’d appear after the primaries. So of course Obama is going to go on Fox when he’s cratering in the polls and in public perception.
I wonder how many Obama bloggers are feeling, let’s see, how do I put this?
Stupid. They should.
One of the major Obama blogs blasted what the campaign sent them yesterday.
I’m sure it made the boss happy, though I’m sorry it was Greg Sargent who wrote the post that the Obama team knew they’d get.
Here is what the adviser IM-ed me about this today:
We are clear-eyed about Fox?’s role in the dissemination and amplification
of Republican talking points this election. They have been the tip of the
spear when it comes to repeatedly broadcasting some of the most specious
of rumors about Obama. He is going on their Sunday show to take Fox on,
not because we have any illusion about their motives or politics in this
election. The Obama adviser declined to detail how he’d be taking on Fox. But if Obama
does this, it could end up playing to his advantage. It’ll be interesting
to see how this plays out.
Take Fox on?
When has Obama taken anyone on? He ducks out whenever presented with a real challenge, whether we’re talking the MoveOn.org vote, Kyl-Lieberman, or votes in Illinois where he voted “present.” So anyone thinking he was going to “take on” Fox should lose their analyst credentials.
There’s only one reason Obama went on Fox. He got his butt handed to him in
Pennsylvania, finding out he not only lost working class Dems, Catholics and
women, but that seniors aren’t buying him either. Obama’s team is in resuscitation
mode.
Meanwhile, as everyone worries about the African American vote, how about someone
paying attention to the droves of women and Clinton voters who will side with
McCain if Obama’s the nominee? Hello? Anybody?
Now, all of this political maneuvering and making his blogger base look like
children doesn’t mean Senator Obama won’t be the nominee, given the math and
the general spinelessness of Democrats to prefer rules over winning. But Obama’s
current reality requires sucking up to people Clinton is winning over in droves.
Oh, and right now, I’d say Obama’s chance of doing that is a long shot, especially
with Rev. Wright’s Rehabilitation and Retribution Tour going on.
But to the extent the Obama blogs actually believe Obama would be tough reveals
the total ignorance of these people in analyzing their candidate. Most of these
same blogs have lost all commentary credibility. Hey, but that doesn’t keep
them from hoping.
Sorry, but I come from the part of the Democratic party that actual relies
on the president to help me and mine, which isn’t going to happen from the Obama
wing, because it’s becoming more and more apparent that his way to the White
House will be rocky, really, really rocky. He’s no longer the Democrats’ best hope in November, if he ever was.
