Quit Standing By Your Man

The Associated Press reported that Spitzer will announce at 11:30 a.m. that his resignation will be effective Monday. – New York Post

If the roles were reversed, can you imagine any man standing behind his woman
in a public setting where he was being hauled before cameras in humiliation?
Fughetaboutit! Jon Stewart did a hilarious skit last night showing how absurd the notion is. So whether it’s the ex-wife of James McGreevey, or Spitzer’s wife this week, political
wives need to kick this 20th century habit. When this was suggested that women should stop this awful habit on CNN last night by a woman, Prof. Dershowitz went ballistic.

But nothing is more fitting than having the inimitable idiocy of Dr. Laura equate simple infidelity with Eliot Spitzer’s multiple thousand dollar trysts.
Now, I confused readers in a post about this the other day when
I went from Spitzer’s situation to the reason’s infidelity sometimes
happens, subjects that are incredibly complicated. But trysts like Spitzer’s are not normal infidelity. His kind of infidelity
rarely has anything to do with the wife. Dr. Laura doesn’t know what she’s talking about (with video), because she likely has never done the research, which I have, to find out the more complicated notions of what drives some men to extra exclusive marital wandering. The shock over how long Spitzer’s been involved in these trysts I also find interesting, because this fits the pattern I have researched.

Now the reason Dr. Laura’s chiming
in is especially humorous to me is that back in the mid-1990s I was involved in a smack down with her,
as were others, when she was given a TV show. Her rancid ramblings on homosexuality
were just too much for TV as far as some of us were concerned, so there was a broad effort to get her off the air.

Well, it seems
she’s jumped the shark again, only this time to blame Spitzer’s wife for his thousand dollar hooker habit. No one who knows her is surprised by Dr. Laura offering her ignorance to the masses. The truth is at this level what Spitzer was likely looking for goes well beyond what any wife could provide. It’s about him, not her. Dr. Laura is wrong yet again.

But maybe we can all hope that the next time this happens, because it will happen again, the man will walk out on his own, leaving the woman he’s humiliated, and the family if there is one, separate from his public mea culpa. It’s not her fault and she should not have to parade herself in public because he screwed up.
