Commitment to Purpose

… .. You can’t even find it listed at his Senate Web site, but Sen. Obama is the chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs for the Senate Foreign Relations committee. That subcommittee oversees “U.S. involvement with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), relations with the European Union (EU), and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Matters relating to Greenland and the northern polar region are also the responsibility of this subcommittee.” (source)

It’s the same drive that brought Clinton to the State of the Black Union forum in New Orleans over the weekend, while Obama ducked it in order to campaign. It’s about commitment to purpose, which goes beyond preening in front of the people, but to actually doing your job when the cameras aren’t rolling and there is no praise except the satisfaction of the work itself and a job well done. It’s the difference between serving and duty versus ego.
