9,000 Strong Show Up for Dinner

It was a big night in Iowa, but the headline for Politico.com is all Clinton and Obama. David Yepsen gave the evening to Barack Obama.

This take is a classic, coming before Clinton and Obama spoke:

For the record, dinner was over hours ago, and it’s mostly now just drinking. The crowd is still paying attention, sort of.

Here’s what The New York Times had to say:

The presidential candidates drew a lottery for who would speak first. Mr.
Edwards was assigned that slot. The event concludes with Mrs. Clinton and
Mr. Obama, which serves as an enticement for people to stay in their seats
until the end of the night.

And that includes the presidential hopefuls themselves. One rule of the
evening: the candidates must stay inside the hall and listen to their rivals.
That, at least in the opening moments, is producing some interesting tension,
with Mr. Edwards launching a full-throated criticism of Democrats for failing
to pass health care reform in the 1990s.

As he spoke, he looked directly at Mrs. Clinton, who was seated several yards
away.

Scenes
From the Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner

Barack Obama is on “Meet the Press” today, which I’m really looking
forward to seeing, though it will be on very little sleep. He didn’t even start his speech last night until late.

This week is the Democratic CNN debate, which will be the last big event before
the Thanksgiving holiday. The importance of it cannot be denied.

Enjoy your Sunday morning. Put any links about the Jefferson Jackson
dinner in the comments, or anything else you’re reading that’s important Feel free to load YouTubes in Hot Topics. Chase will have more on the event a bit later.

And last but not least, what Digby said, because I know exactly how she feels.

… .. I get accused of being a shill for Clinton all the time because I write about this stuff and it’s assumed that it’s some sort of partisan plot to boost her candidacy. But the truth is that I haven’t backed anyone and my reasons for highlighting this narrative is because it reveals the way these Village pundits really think. I don’t care who you support in the election, this kind of talk — especially just spewing out in the mainstream media with very little awareness — makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck if you happen to be female. It’s like having everyone assume that the “normal” state of being in this world is male and this strange idea of appealing to women is some sort of illegitimate pander to an extreme, fringe interest group. … ..

… .. But what did surprise me — and I guess I’m just a fool for not having realized it before — is that so many of these men in the media seem to have such severe psychological issues in this sphere. Tucker and Matthews and many of their guests are personally offended that a woman would appeal directly to other women for votes, as if that’s undemocratic and unfair. And they get extremely bent out of shape when their sexist attitudes are challenged. … ..
