Got Religion?

For a change, it’s Republicans in the target zone on this issue today. I’m loving it. No doubt so is Ron Paul, who is cleaning up in cash and wowing people in Iowa, where Rudy is almost non-existent, and Slick Mitt’s trying to buy. As for Thompson, I’ll get to him.

There can be no doubt, however, that Rudy is in trouble with the Christian conservatives. McCain can feel his pain.
But are they really going to boycott Rudy for Hollywood Fred? Even in a soft interview with Ken doll Sean Hannity, Fred Thompson came off like an old geezer
with half a brain lobe tied behind his wife’s back. Rudy is the only Republican showing
he can beat who Republicans have decided will be our nominee: Hillary Clinton.
Mr. Dobson is not moved by Rudy’s perceived power.

After two hours of deliberation, we voted on a resolution that can be summarized
as follows: If neither of the two major political parties nominates an individual
who pledges himself or herself to the sanctity of human life, we will join
others in voting for a minor-party candidate. Those agreeing with the proposition
were invited to stand. The result was almost unanimous.

The other issue discussed at length concerned the advisability of creating
a third party if Democrats and Republicans do indeed abandon the sanctity
of human life and other traditional family values. Though there was some support
for the proposal, no consensus emerged.

Thompson was to be the Christian conservatives’ alternative to serial wife-swapper-outer
Giuliani. But he’s proved to be a horrible candidate and has stalled in second
place. Chase Martyn told a hilarious story yesterday on my show. Evidently in Iowa, Thompson promised to answer press questions, but then had the press following him around, waiting outside the bathroom, then outside while he ate, and in the end walked past the press, getting into his SUV without taking one question or saying one word to the national press corps he’d kept waiting and waiting. So when Thompson ended up dissing Iowa’s own Chuck Grassley, feeling burned, the press was more than happy to report on it. Iowans were not amused. Mary Matalin can pick ‘em, can’t she? First George Allen and now Fred
Thompson; before that it was Dick Cheney. Carville must be laughing inside his
brain. He wouldn’t dare laugh out loud, because he loves her, but also because
she’d likely chop off his head. The woman looks positively mean.

That Rudy is also going to be denied communion from one bishop makes this whole
thing look even worse. From my old home town St. Louis:

This time, there’s a Republican Catholic whose position on abortion rights
contradicts church teaching. And Burke is pressing the issue again, saying
that anyone — not just a bishop — administering Communion is morally
obligated to deny it to wayward Catholic politicians.

Next month, Burke is expected to push the nation’s bishops to adopt his position
in a document on political responsibility they will issue to Catholics before
the election.

Then there is Slick Mitt’s Mormon problem, especially in the south, which no one wants to mention. McCain was asked
about it recently, via
TPM
.

When asked if he considered Mormons to be Christians, McCain said, “I
don’t know. I respect their faith. I’ve never frankly looked at the Mormon
religion. I’ve known a lot of Mormons who are wonderful people. More importantly,
I don’t think it should be held against Gov. Romney. The fact that he’s a
Mormon should not be a factor in people’s judgment.”

With Dobson threatening to scuttle support for a liberal candidate like Rudy
you’ve got to wonder if some aren’t wishing Jerry Falwell was still alive. He
was all in for Mr. 9/11. For Falwell it was terrorism or bust. I’m still not convinced that all things terror won’t carry the day in the end.
