Another Week Of Shame And Outrage
guest post by Ed Encho
Another week in post 9/11 America, another week of darkness, another week of sorrow and shame. The horrifying example of how far we have crawled down the rabbit hole was the incident where a college student who dared to ask John Kerry some inconvenient questions was tasered while Kerry was trying to answer. The increasingly frequent escalation of violence against citizens by an ever more militarized police looking to emulate Jack Bauer is as disturbing a trend as any today and just wait until Blackwater comes home. I don’t know what is more shameful, the incident itself, some ‘progressive’ bloggers seeking to rationalize it or the little swine in the audience who actually cheered as Andrew Meyer was dragged away by the goons in blue.
Senate Republicans and their toady Lieberman continue their efforts to cement the police state into place by not only refusing to allow a vote on the restoration of habeas corpus but also by stabbing the troops in the back by blocking the Webb amendment which was threatened with a filibuster by Dirty Mitch’s mob. The troops you see are only worth ‘supporting’ when the elephant team finds it expedient to use them as a political football. Thursday’s circus condemning the MoveOn ad was beyond the pale even for the house of ill repute that is the U.S. Senate and it is far past time for a concerted effort to expunge Harry Reid from his role as Majority Leader. Americans are dying in a foreign land for a mistake and the ridiculously pathetic Reid allows this disgusting display of contempt for free speech to even occur? The man has always been out of his league, it’s time to acknowledge this and find a leader with principles and some intestinal fortitude.
The leadersheep love to hide behind the “we don’t have the votes” excuse but they have blown the initiative, squandered the public trust and become accomplices of the Bush regime due to their reluctance to take a stand against anything. The real rallying cry should be “we don’t have the spine” for this bunch who make Neville Chamberlain look like Alexander the Great. Come on Harry, let’s hear some righteous indignation for a change, how about working the media refs or making the GOP follow through on their threats. While the Dems dither, the anger of those who are now fully awake in this country comes to a slow rolling boil and the rage may come home to roost in November 2008. This is a rare opportunity in history, a time for a massive political realignment that can wrest the country back from the fascists, the looters and the blood barters as well as marginalize the hammerheads for generations while restoring America to greatness, and yet the Democrats are pissing it away by treating those sickened by these illegal wars as lepers.
Even King George himself jumped aboard the wingnut bandwagon trying to blame the ad on all Democrats. The usual fifth columnists have their panties in a twist that anyone would dare to question the word of the “ass kissing little chickenshit” and Bush got pissy too:, “I thought that the ad was disgusting…I felt like the ad was an attack not only on Gen. Petraeus but on the U.S. military, and I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democrat party spoke out strongly against that ad…”and that leads me to come to this conclusion: that most Democrats are afraid of irritating a left-wing group like Moveon.org, or more afraid of irritating them, then they are of irritating the United States Military,” said the commander guy. This is bogus because MoveOn.org is far more in line with mainstream America than the chickenhawks on the extreme right would lead people to believe. Libertarians and other principled conservatives are practically begging for an alliance against the war party and the unifying cause could be restoring and honoring the constitution. Former marine Scott Ritter even wrote a book on this idea entitled Waging Peace and I would strongly recommend it to those who are serious in confronting and dismantling the war machine.
An increasingly vocal majority of Americans have had it with this sort of crap. Americans are fed up with a lawless administration, the disembowelment of the constitution and the maniacal fat-asses over at the AEI and their damned wars. Enough is enough and the Democrats have to make a choice, it is either time to ride the zeitgeist or reap the whirlwind because as one of my favorite essayists William Rivers Pitt so accurately put it in his excellent column A Time To Reap a few months back:
“There is something happening today in America. With the right kind of ears, you can hear it in the sound of millions of brows slowly furrowing in anger and disgust. It feels like those tense moments just before the eruption of a summer thunderstorm, those moments when the air is electric, the ozone reek of spent lightning fills the world, and you know that something very loud is about to happen.
And you CAN hear it. You could hear it in Washington last weekend, you can hear it in Jena and sweet Jesus, for you can hear it in stores, workplaces, churches and other areas where criticism of the Bush regime was at one time unthinkable and by God does it sound good. This sort of slow building outrage shows that a large number of Americans are starting to ‘get it’ that their system has failed them utterly and completely and the old paradigms that divide us are now being challenged. There is a huge storm of revulsion building in this country and more than anything it is a time to renounce politics as usual, discard stereotypes and scream ala Howard Beale “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”. Where are the leaders? Cowering behind their rapidly eroding status quo, too timid to dare to challenge the affront to American ideals and human dignity that has swept the fruited plain like the black plague for the past six and a half shame drenched years. They are hiding from their constitutional responsibilities and by God come election time there will be a price to pay if this is allowed to continue any longer.
