Faith and the ‘08 Democrats updated

VIDEO: Edwards on Faith; Part II
Obama on Faith
Clinton on Faith

Soledad O’Brien is the host for the CNN question and answer on faith. Rev. Jim Wallis is sponsoring the forum, along with Sojourners. One of O’Brien’s questions to Edwards was: What is the biggest sin you have committed? That gives you an idea how off the chart this event could turn out to be. Each candidate gets 15 minutes.

Edwards was up first, talking about evolution, then gay marriage, followed by are we a Christian nation? Then Wallis asked about the poor.

“This is the cause of my life.” – John Edwards

Obama’s first question was about whether God is on the side of our troops. Next came a question about the Palestinian – Israeli conflict. The questions much different than Edwards.

“Abu Ghraib, obviously, is something that all of us should be ashamed for, even if you were supportive of a war. I believe Guantanamo, the decision to detain people without charges, is unjust.” – Barack Obama

Clinton will be next, so stay tuned for an update here on her. UPDATE: Clinton came on and O’brien said she was going to ask a tough question, it was about infidelity and how faith helped her during that time.

“I’m not sure I would have gotten through it without my faith.” – Hillary Clinton

More to come, including video. I’ll update within this post as the hour proceeds.

On a personal note, this subject is important to me, as I believe it is to many Americans, including those who are not religious. However rambunctious my faith patterns may be, though I am an Episcopalian, my faith and spirituality has been very important in my life. There have been moments in my life that I likely would not have survived without it. However, as Mr. Bush has used faith in politics, it’s become increasingly urgent to become engaged in how politicians see faith, especially as it manifests in the public square. Hope you find this thread interesting, whether you are religious or not.
