U.S. Troops Missing

Turning the Iraqi civil war into the fear
of an Islamic state
, while attacking Democrats in the interim. It’s great
political sport.

A power struggle has emerged between the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq,
an organisation with ambitions to become a state which has been set up by
Al-Qaeda, and more moderate Sunni groups. They are battling for the long-term
control of central and western areas which they believe could break away from
Kurdish and Shi’ite-dominated provinces once the coalition forces depart.

According to an analysis compiled by US intelligence agencies, the Islamic
State has ambitions to create a terrorist enclave in the Iraqi provinces of
Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, Salah al-Din, Nineveh and parts of Babil.

“Al-Qaeda are on the way to establish their first stronghold in the
Middle East,” warned an American official. “If they succeed, it
will be a catastrophe and an imminent danger to Saudi Arabia and Jordan.”
… ..

Al-Qaeda
planning militant Islamic state within Iraq

I’d like to know who that unnamed “American official” is, wouldn’t
you? I’d also like to know why all things in Iraqi lead to Al Qaeda. How
many times do we have to remind people that this is a civil war with local
militants and Arab foreign fighters going up against one another, and Al Qaeda chiming in too, no doubt?
However, they aren’t the dominant force or problem inside Iraq.

Three U.S. troops are missing. However, the Islamic State
of Iraq, who say they have them, hasn’t shown any proof whatsoever.

A militant group linked to Al Qaeda claimed today to have captured American
troops during an ambush that killed four U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter,
as the search continued for the missing soldiers.

The claim came from the Islamic State of Iraq, a coalition of Sunni Arab
insurgent groups that includes Al Qaeda in Iraq. There was no way to verify
the authenticity of the statement, which appeared on the group’s website but
offered no photographic proof. It also did not say how many soldiers it was
holding. Three Americans disappeared Saturday following the ambush southwest
of Baghdad. The military did not immediately identify the dead and missing
soldiers and their unit. …

Group
claims to have U.S. soldiers captive

The U.S. soldiers at this point are “missing.” In fact, General Barry
McCaffrey said today that it’s actually quite possible the soldiers are pinned
down in the area where the ambush took place, waiting for rescue. They’re likely somewhere in the “triangle of death,” which has been given us hell. The name is not for nothin’.

Of course, all these facts haven’t kept the wingnuts from screaming Al
Qaeda
Al Qaeda
Al Qaeda. The troops
may end up in the hands of a splinter group linked to Al Qaeda, but right now
we have no evidence. But the wingnuts don’t care about the facts. What they
want to do is pump up the volume for the surge. That’s their bottom line. So
while talking about the troops being in Al Qaeda’s hands they’re also turning the possible but not proven taking of troops on the Democrats, which includes swipes at Nancy Pelosi and the entire Democratic Party because we think it’s time the Iraqis took over responsibility for their own country, you know, especially since they want to.

How many of you believe the Iraqi Kurds, Sunni and Shia will let Al Qaeda take
their country? The wingnuts have no faith in the Iraqis. That’s the opinion of the wingnut chorus. But why are these bloggers so quick to sell out the Iraqis? Could it be that this rhetorical line
serves their political purposes? I’m betting on the Iraqis. There’s no way the
Kurds, Iraqi Sunni and Shias are going to let Al Qaeda take their country. They’ve
got a lot more spine than that.
