Gonzo and the Emails –bumped – updated below–

something smells…

They even dissed Fitz.

U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald was ranked among prosecutors who had \”not distinguished themselves\” on a Justice Department chart sent to the White House in March 2005, when he was in the midst of leading the CIA leak investigation that resulted in the perjury conviction of a vice presidential aide, administration officials said yesterday.

As you no doubt know by now, the document dump is a mess, or is that a mass? Pick one. It\’s 3,000 pages. As Josh says, help! If you see anything that jumps out at you, please put it in the comments. It\’s a paper blizzard. We need to read it, because Rush and Sean Hannity sure won\’t do it. One of my favorites is from a non-favorite Democrat, Mark Pryor, in a letter to Gonzo that goes like this…

… .. Second, I am astonished that the reason given by your office for the interim appointment is that the First Assistant U.S. Attorney is on maternity leave and therefore would not be able to perform the responsibilities of the appointment. This reason was given to my Chief of Staff, to the news media, and to me by your liaison in a meeting this week. This concerns me on several levels, but most importantly it uses pregnancy and motherhood as conditions that deny an appointment. While this may not be actionable in a public employment setting, it clearly would be in a private employment setting. The U.S. Department of Justice should never discriminate against women in this manner. … ..

Letter from Senator Mark Pryor to A.G. Alberto Gonzales (1.12.07)

Ah, yes, don\’t you love those Republican family values. Men work and get promoted. Pregnant women stay at home.

I also enjoyed the one whree Tim Griffin says that \”The RNC was in no way trying to keep anyone from voting. … .. During the closing weeks of the 2004 presidential campaign when Mighty Mouse, Donald Duck, etc. were registering… .. Some bloggers, etc. tried to spin in in the last week of the election as the Republicans trying to keep minorities from voting, but that was a lie.\” Right, the RNC would never keep minorities from voting, right?

In one correspondence regarding Attorney Lam, after an article in the Union-Tribune, the article was so alarming to McNulty that all he could say was \”Wow. Has she been called yet?\”

But I simply loved the \”DRAFT Talking Points\” (You have to scroll to find this email text from Tasia Scolinos.): … \”Our intention in not providing a full explanation initially was to avoid protracted discussions and make these difficult discussions as non-inflammatory as possible for those being asked to resign.\” Ho-boy.

Of course, Clinton is mentioned periodically, then repeated, as he fired the U.S. Attorneys, too. However, what they always leave out is that he didn\’t do it in the middle of his second term. Minor detail that isn\’t so minor.

And the hits just keep on comin\’.

UPDATE (11:20 a.m.): More Gonzo is a Goner? speculation.

UPDATE (9:35): Is Bush staying the course on Gonzo? … … and don\’t miss Mash\’s Gonzopedia!
