No kidding, general. General Pace\’s personal beliefs have no business in this debate. The fact that
he\’s absolutely wrong is also a point worth discussing. That a Republican leader is slamming the general is too.
In a rare rebuke of the nation\’s top military officer, Sen. John
Warner, R-Va., says he strongly disagrees with Gen. Peter Pace\’s views that
homosexuality is \”immoral.\”\”I respectfully, but strongly, disagree with the chairman\’s
view that homosexuality is immoral,\” Warner said in a statement released
by his office.Warner was reacting to Pace\’s unusual defense of the military\’s \”don\’t
ask, don\’t tell\” policy on gays in the military.Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in an interview with
the Chicago Tribune that he supported the policy because he believed homosexuality
was \”immoral\” and that the military \”should not condone immoral
acts.\”And Pace is not backing down. In a statement released this afternoon, he
clarified his comments, saying, \”In expressing my support for the current
policy, I also offered some personal opinions about moral conduct. …
I should have focused more on my support of the policy and less on my personal
moral views.\”Republican
Rebukes Pace, but Defense Secretary Defends \’Don\’t Ask\’ Policy
But the real issue is the Republican hypocrisy on moral values that stem from the incompetence in Iraq, to the failures after Katrina, to the failures to take care of veterans in the Walter Reed scandal, just the latest outrage in Republican \”support the troop\” failures.
The comments
on this post illustrate the passion behind the wingnuts on a matter that
is nothing more than religious bigotry. They\’re proud of their ignorance to
boot.
People choose to be gay…mainly because it\’s now trendy…so they can take
all that goes with that choice. They shouldn\’t have the same rights. – Not
Matt ShepherdI think gays should be allowed in the military on one condition. They must
ONLY fight on the front line – robertjamesWe each have to hold ourselves to a higher moral level, before casting the
first stone. I agree with the General. I do not like to have anyone (mostly
the media) try to presuade me into believing homosexuality is acceptable.
The General compared it to Adultry, I compare it to sexual deviant behaviour,
not unlike adults wanting to have sex with children. You may not like to hear
what I have to say, but this is AMERICA, where I am free to say what I believe
and for the love of my country, I want it held to a higher moral level than
you do. – highermorallevelI think it\’s about time that someone stood up and said what they believe
instead of trying to be a coward or try to be pc. He said what he believed
and spoke his mind. And do..as always……..throw in the homophobia. I could
give two hoots about someones sexual choice. I do not go round saying I\’m
straight. Now, however, people ask. Adam and Eve…Adam and Steve would have
netted nana. Yes, I am a christian and will not condone a lifestyle other
than what the bible commands. The don\’t ask don\’t tell came from ole slick
willy…….one of many of his blunders. And where have you been with the
\”they are now allowing criminals\” into the military? Many years
ago for men it was either serve your country or go to jail. – kattI feel it\’s fine to be gay,as long as they practice celibacy! – Joe D.
am very proud to be an American today! It is wonderful to know that the leadership
of our military has such high moral standards. He is right–100%! Neither
homosexual acts nor adultery should be allowed or condoned by any of us.As for the comment regarding General Pace being \”an educated military
man and he should know better\”, apparently he does! Apparently he showed
just how upstanding and intelligent he is. Apparently he knows what it takes
to make our military the best in the world. – KIM
The Republican Party has absolutely no moral grounding or standing any longer.
Just look at the GOP field for \’08. Wives abound, in serial marriages that exceed
two, even three divorces, plus a marriage to a third cousin, with regular cross-dressing
on the side. No wonder Mitt Romney is looking better to the wingnuts. He\’s the
only contender with one wife. Insert Mrs. Romney\’s Mormon joke here.
\”The biggest difference between Mitt Romney and the other candidates,\”
she said, is that Mitt has \”only had one wife.\” – Hotline
CWA is sending out fundraising emails on the subject: \’Gay\’ Activists Attack Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, complete with contact info of the DoD. Let the games begin.
UPDATE (10:11 p.m.): First Senator Warner, now former Senator Alan Simpson slaps Pace\’s comments and the wrong headed philosophy behind don\’t ask, don\’t tell. These two Republicans make Barry Goldwater proud.
As a lifelong Republican who served in the Army in Germany, I believe it is critical that we review — and overturn — the ban on gay service in the military. I voted for \”don\’t ask, don\’t tell.\” But much has changed since 1993. … ..
