Al Gore Isn\’t Running… and other news

This morning I was dealing with the
threat of being sued
by a wingnut blogger who defames Muslims at
every turn, but thinks my using a photo of her I got off a simple Google search
is worthy of a lawsuit. I was also talking to my lawyer (who happens to be my
big brother), First Amendment lawyers, copyright lawyers, and got a lot of help
from my progressive friends, which included Bob,
Mash
and Joe
Gandelman
, as well as others who have also posted on it, as well as emailed
me on it. Who
the hell is Debbie Schlussel?
is right, Roxanne. So, when the afternoon
came, there were so many stories I hadn\’t covered today.

Just when you thought O.J. was gone, he comes back in.

In his telling, a second man, a close friend he calls Charlie, is
with him during the killings.
Charlie is an unwilling accomplice,
repeatedly urging Simpson to stop what he is doing. Does \”Charlie\”
really exist? Perhaps. At the time, many wondered if Simpson had help, if
not with the actual killings then with getting rid of evidence. The police
never found sufficient evidence to charge anyone else.

Evidence of
Guilt?

A guy named Charlie?

Obviously, O.J. can no longer afford the good drugs anymore.

But the abject infuriation of the day, besides some Republican wingnut threatening
to sue me, that is, is what I\’ve predicted all along. Senate Democrats are going
to symbolically show they are against escalation, but evidently can\’t find where
their spines are located, so they\’re going to cave on the action part
of WHAT PART OF NO ESCALATION DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND, MR. BUSH.

But Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, the new chairman of the Senate Armed
Services Committee, said on CNN on Sunday that he did not believe Congress
should “use the power of the purse” to halt the president’s
plan and that it should go no further than approving nonbinding resolutions
opposing it.

While most Democratic leaders have not endorsed taking steps beyond seeking
to pass nonbinding resolutions opposing the troop increase, pressure has been
mounting in the past week from opponents of the war to take more direct and
assertive action to block Mr. Bush.

In an interview on “60 Minutes” that was broadcast Sunday night
Mr. Bush said: “Listen, we’ve got people criticizing this plan
before it’s had a chance to work. They’re saying, ‘We’re
not even gonna fund this thing.’ ”

“I will resist that,” he added.

On “Fox News Sunday” Mr. Cheney acknowledged that Congress had
fiscal oversight of the war but said, “You also cannot run a war by
committee.” …

Democrats
Are Unified in Opposition to Troop Increase, but Split Over What to Do About
It

Let\’s get something clear, shall we?

It\’s not Democrats who are \”split over what to do about it.\” It\’s
D.C. DEMOCRATS who don\’t know what to do about it,
specifically, Senate Democrats. Got it? We out here in the real world know exactly
what to do.

By the way, so does John Edwards, which might be the reason Hillary
sent Howard
out to diss Edwards
going to Harlem
.

\”In 2004, John Edwards used to constantly brag about running a positive
campaign. Today, he has unfortunately chosen to open his campaign with political
attacks on Democrats who are fighting the Bush administration\’s Iraq policy,\”
said Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson.

It is the first time that Clinton has slammed one of her Democratic rivals
by name and comes a full year before the first presidential contests in Iowa
and New Hampshire.

Talk about lame.

So is this.

Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
said he is working with a bipartisan group of senators to pass a nonbinding
resolution \”simply saying that we do not agree that more troops are the
answer.\” Levin said he would not support a fund cutoff. He said yesterday
on CNN\’s \”Late Edition\” that his approach \”will be a very strong
message to the Iraqis that they\’ve got to resolve their political differences.\”

(snip)

\”We have money in the \’07 budget, which has been appropriated by the
Congress, to move these troops to Iraq, and the president will be doing that,\”
Hadley said on ABC\’s \”This Week.\”

(snip)

Also on CBS, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said, \”I think that all of us
are concerned in making sure that whatever resolutions or legislation or proposals
that are out there don\’t potentially strand troops that are already there.\”

Democrats
Differ on Iraq Bill\’s Bite

Is Senator Obama kidding? No Democrat would ever \”strand
troops that are already there.\”
Has Senator Obama ever listened to
Jack Murtha? Talk about self-serving posturing. Obama knows better than this,
because he\’s smarter than this comment illustrates. Unfortunately, he keeps
saying it. Will Obama support Kennedy\’s legislation? Take a guess.

It is infuriating.

Sign the John
Edwards
petition. He is standing up against funding Bush\’s escalation. When
Senator Obama has a link that says the same I\’ll link to it, but I\’m not holding
my breath. Believe me, it doesn\’t make me happy to say so, either.

But the latest news is that Republicans are just about ready to make the walk
to the White House to tell Mr. Bush it is over, ala when Goldwater
told Nixon it was over. We shall see, but obviously they\’re scared spitless
of 2008 already.

More tomorrow. Radio show podcasts are below. Oh, and by the way, it\’s official. Al Gore isn\’t running. I saved the best for last.
