Iran's 'Nu-cular' Dreams –updated–

Could Bush have been more clueless on this one? Invading the wrong country
doesn't begin to describe it. Now, because of Bush's myopic obsession with Saddam,
not only is Iran expanding its power base, but we've got a situation that puts
all of us in danger. Why? Because George W. Bush isn't beyond going after Iran,
even as we scramble for our political lives in Iraq. This latest news will only make Junior's trigger finger itch, which makes me nervous.

International Atomic Energy experts have found unexplained plutonium and
enriched uranium traces in a nuclear waste facility in Iran and have asked
Tehran for an explanation, an IAEA report said Tuesday.

The report prepared for next week's meeting of the 35-nation IAEA also faulted
Tehran for not cooperating with the agency's attempts to investigate suspicious
aspects of Iran's nuclear program that have lead to fears it might be interested
in developing nuclear arms. As well, the four-page paper made available to
The Associated Press confirmed that Iran continues uranium enrichment experiments
in defiance of the U.N. Security Council.

There's also a story about Iran
and al Qaeda
now making the rounds, as everyone starts looking outward,
beyond Iraq.

My blog pal Sean-Paul is just back
from Iran
, which is the country we'll be turning to more often in the very
near future. That's where the trouble was from the start, but Bush couldn't
see it, because the neocons didn't put that in his presidential cereal. When
they finally did all we got was some stinkin' “axis of evil” line that only made matters worse.

This is going to be a very bumpy ride. If we don't do something serious about
Iraq, where Iran is fomenting a lot of trouble in the south, Iran will only
become a bigger thorn, which is not necessary. Get ready for Baker-Hamilton to finally push Junior to actually start talking to both Iran and Syria. That will at least be a start. I'd say better late than never, but it hasn't happened yet.

UPDATE (2:02 p.m.): Sean-Paul has more and I agree with his assessment.
