Election Season Terrorist Threat

27 October 2006 9:14 am by Taylor Marsh

A terrorist alert has been issued for our Navy vessels in the Persian Gulf.
It's a "general threat."

There is no specific intelligence, but they're sending out the warning anyway.

The market has shrugged it off, which gives you an idea of how serious everyone who knows anything is taking it.

It's a "precaution," because of public threats from al Qaeda. The
election has nothing to do with it. I added that part. Insert cough here.

United Arab Emirates – Coalition naval forces in the Gulf are on watch for
possible terror threats to oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, a British
navy official said Friday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized
to speak to the press, said an al-Qaida threat last month to target Gulf oil
terminals had resulted in stepped-up security and vigilance at Saudi Arabia's
Ras Tanura terminal, as well as a refinery in Bahrain.

Oil exports in the region were proceeding as normal, he said.

Meanwhile, Iran is getting busy. They've released information to the Iranian
Students News Agency because they don't get heat when offering up information
through ISNA. Bottom line is Iran is saying it's "doubled its capacity
to enrich uranium, which basically means they've got a second system working
that equates to an expansion of their program. No one is surprised.

The Vienna, Austria-based IAEA would not comment on the report.

Iran says it plans to install 3,000 centrifuges at Natanz by the end of this
year. Some 54,000 centrifuges would be required to produce enough nuclear
fuel for a reactor.

Although Iran is nowhere near that goal, its successful operation of more
cascades of centrifuges indicates that the country is gradually mastering
the complexities of producing enriched uranium.

The United States accuses Iran of secretly trying to build an atomic bomb
under the guise of a civilian nuclear program. But Iran denies this, saying
its program is strictly for the generation of electricity.

So, we've got an election season "general" terrorist threat coming
out, with Iran sending a middle finger salute to the world. Nice foreign policy
Bush has got these days, with the rubber stamp Republicans following in lock step. Why aren't we talking to the Iranians? I can't quite
remember. Oh, right, Bush doesn't want to. I get it. How's that working for us
so far?
