Jim Webb Closes Gap on Allen –updated–

Jim Webb's new commercial…

UPDATE (12:05 p.m.): Wow, George Allen's campaign manager, Dick Wadhams, retracts Allen's macaca apology.

Yep, that's George Allen in Confederate drag.
(h/t Wonkette)

Three points? That's it?

A sitting senator who was once the golden boy for '08 is now in the fight of
his political life. But no matter the outcome, Webb making Allen actually campaign for his Senate seat has exposed the reality behind the man. It's unlikely that Allen's presidential hopes will ever see the light of day. Good riddance, I say.

Oh, what a difference being caught on tape can make, hey George?

Get Mary Matalin some Depends, because Virginians have themselves a real race.
It's not why she originally signed on.

GOP Allen's Once Large Lead Evaporates: In an election for the United States
Senate in Virginia today, 8/21/06, incumbent Republican George Allen
edges Democrat challenger James Webb 48% to 45%, according to an
exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for W*USA-TV in Washington, DC.

Since an identical SurveyUSA poll released 6/28/06, Allen has lost 8 points
and Webb has gained 8 points. Allen's lead has shrunk from 19 points to 3
points.

Interviewing for this poll began 8/18/06, one week after Allen singled out
a Webb campaign worker at an Allen rally. Allen has lost support across all
demographic groups, but in particular, among younger voters. He has gone from
Plus 23 to Minus 17, a swing of 40 points. In Southeastern VA, Allen has gone
from a 2:1 lead to a tie, a 31-point swing.

This race is a long way from being over. It will take every bit of effort Virginians
have got to throw this bum out. But Webb is within striking distance.

Do you still feel like singing, George?

I'll let John Kerry take us out.

\”… Welcome to our America, where immigration is a source of pride and not a punch line. Welcome to a politics where a young Indian American born in Fairfax Virginia can tell a US Senator: “I’m just as American as you are.” And welcome to Virginia where it’s clear some Republicans need reminding about the “truths” a real Virginian—Thomas Jefferson– wrote were “self evident” two hundred thirty years ago. And if you ever want a test of whether Republicans are ashamed of George Allen or just embarrassed by him, it comes on November 7th when we have a chance to say ‘welcome to the United States Senate– to his Democratic opponent, Jim Webb.’\” – John Kerry
