Nobody's Ever Guilty in Bushland
What case for WMDs? It's about democracy in Iraq. Spreading freedom.
Changing the Middle East. Picture Jon Stewart delivering the lines for Bush.
The scene is set.
So what if the U.S. military has kept you from going under in Iraq. “Stay the course,” send 'em back in. Exit strategy? We don't need no stinkin' exit strategy. Rummy's the man.
Republicans are the party of God. The “family values”
party. The party that's strong on national security. Duke Cunningham is just
one guy. Tom Delay didn't do anything wrong, really. It's all politics. Never
mind those forced abortions in the Marianas. Ralph Reed? He's a good “Christian.”
Not to worry. As for Abramoff, well, he's just a bad guy, never heard of him.
Oh, and Deadeye Dick wasn't drinking. It was no big deal that
the ranch owner called the media. No problem with not telling the president
he shot some guy in the face. Let it slide.
Oil prices? Don't look at us. Subsidies for big oil are good for
the American people. Here's a $100. Don't call me when it's gone.
Bill Bennett? So what if the Republican's morals man had a gambling
fetish. No big deal. Quit betting. Get a job on CNN. Poof, problem solved.
Newt didn't really have ethics problems. And so what if he's backing
out of Iraq like he wasn't one of the guys who helped plan preemption? He's got a new plan, follow it forward and don't ever look back.
Don't bother us about leaking Valerie Plame's name. The president
didn't do it and neither did the vice president. Karl didn't do anything wrong
or he would have been arrested by now, right? Oh, and Scooter Libby, well, they
couldn't get him on the original crime, so what's the big deal?
Sure, the president declassified documents, but that's okay. He's
the president, so it's not illegal if he does it.
As for Rush, he's not guilty either. They always said he was innocent
and so he is. But when you get off with paying court costs and walking, now
that's a good day.
Mr. Limbaugh filed a plea of not guilty in court. Mr. Black
said in a statement that “Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the
start that there was no doctor-shopping, and we continue to hold this position.”(snip)
Before his own problems with painkillers surfaced, Mr. Limbaugh
had regularly told listeners that drug users should be jailed.Florida officials began investigating Mr. Limbaugh in 2003, when a tabloid
report quoted his maid as saying she had assisted him in obtaining OxyContin,
a time-release narcotic. In October of that year, Mr. Limbaugh said on the
air that he was addicted to painkillers and would enter a rehabilitation center. He made the announcement several days after resigning as an ESPN sports analyst
because of race-related remarks he made about Donovan McNabb, the Philadelphia
Eagles' quarterback.Mr. Limbaugh said that he began taking painkillers after he had spinal surgery
in the 1990's and that he had tried to end his addiction to pain medication
before, twice checking into “medical facilities.”Prosecutors seized Mr. Limbaugh's medical records after learning that he
had obtained a large volume of painkillers from a pharmacy near his home in
Palm Beach. But the inquiry slowed as state officials and Mr. Black fought
over whether the records had been seized properly.Kraig T. Kitchin, the president of Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates
Mr. Limbaugh's program, said yesterday that he was “pleased that a settlement
has been reached between Rush Limbaugh and the State of Florida that finally
brings this matter to an end.”Mr. Kitchin added: “Rush's not-guilty plea is consistent with the position
he has taken all along. Throughout it all, he has continued to demonstrate
an unwavering commitment to his listeners, affiliates and advertisers. We
have always stood by Rush — for good reason — and will continue
to do so.”
See, no one is ever accountable in Bushland. They make the rules by which others
are judged. They're exempt through access. It's so easy, no sweat.
Responsibility and playing by the rules is for suckers. Words and phrases Bush and his bunch use, but ones they never apply to
themselves. They slip slide through their black shadow dealings like they owe
nothing to anyone. Pedophiles in Homeland Security, no biggie. Prostitutes and Republican congressmen who were selling national security, through defense
contracts, for sex? It's the Republican way today. Talk about morality,
God and “family values,” while acting like the rules don't apply to
you. Then, just like Rush, walk out of the courthouse after leaving thousands
of dollars behind and think you've paid your dues. Case closed, just like those WMDs. Only in Bushland, where nobody is ever guilty or held responsible, because there's nothing that can't be solved by paying someone off, or changing the game or the rules as you need to. Power does have its perks.
