DEMOCRATS: Take Back National Security
Something is stirring and it's good.

Congressional Democrats promise to "eliminate"
Osama bin Laden and ensure a "responsible redeployment of U.S. forces"
from Iraq in 2006 in an election-year national security policy statement.
In the position paper to be announced Wednesday, Democrats
say they will double the number of special forces and add more spies, which
they suggest will increase the chances of finding al-Qaida's elusive leader.
They do not set a deadline for when all of the 132,000 American troops now
in Iraq should be withdrawn.(snip)
Bush's job approval ratings are in the mid- to high-30s,
and Democrats consistently have about a 10-point lead over Republicans when
people are asked who they want to see in control of Congress. With the public skeptical of the Iraq war and Republicans
and Democrats alike questioning Bush's war policies, Democrats aim to force
Republicans to distance themselves from Bush on Iraq and national security
or rubber-stamp what Democrats contend is a failed policy.

Plan to Take Back National Security
Democrats will throw down the gauntlet on Wednesday, taking back
national security from the incompetence and embarrassment of the Republicans
who have lost Iraq, allowed our borders to remain a sieve, while our ports are
sold to the highest bidder. It begins with keeping the promise of the 9/11 Commission,
which is to make America safe, something that has not been done since bin Laden
attacked this country.
Speaking of Osama, Democrats are tired of him running loose and
plan to implement an increase in Special Forces so we can go get him. It won't
end the terrorism, but it will hold the man accountable who attacked our country
on 9/11.
Democrats know the difference between Saddam and Osama bin Laden,
even if George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and the neocons over at preemption central,
the Weekly Standard, do not.
It's also time that our ports were made safe. After the Dubai
port deal, it's clear that George W. Bush is too busy selling off our national
security interests to pay for the debt he's run up to worry about the security
of the homeland.
This was leaked earlier today, but there will be more early on
Wednesday.
The 10-page brochure, printed both in English and Spanish,
outlines the party's strategies with regards to securing the US from terrorist
attacks and "restoring" the US position abroad. Broken into five
parts, the document outlines the party's strategy for the "21st Century
Military," the "War on Terror," "Homeland Security,"
"Iraq" and "Energy Independence."Democrats say their first goal if elected to a majority
will be the immediate implementation of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations.
The plan repeats this goal, or objectives relating to it, several times, calling
for tighter screening at chemical and nuclear plants and key parts of America's
transportation and agricultural infrastructure. Specifically, it alludes to
the Dubai ports deal, saying the party won't cede ports to "foreign interests
that put America at risk."
Tomorrow will be an important day for Democrats, a day we should
all embrace in a way that allows for real discussion as we make our intentions
known to the Republicans who will remain in control of Congress for the next
7 months. It is a time we begin to make our case. It is important. I look forward
to sharing more with you tomorrow and hope you come back for the discussion.
