Democrats Stop Things from Getting Worse

Let's play kick the donkey! With all the bad news for Bush, it
must be our turn. Get real.

Republicans control Congress, so until we can change that fact
the best we can do is keep things from getting worse. It's not an easy job,
but we did it on Social Security, stopping the Republican privatization, so
we can do it on everything else too. In fact, we are doing it. It's the Democrats
who are leading on the Dubai port deal, with Republicans following our lead.

The most important issue, however, is Iraq, and that's where Bush
and the Republicans who control Congress have totally failed because they're
too weak to admit mistakes, too cowardly to change course, not to mention incapable
of finding an idea to put in the place of “stay the course” that isn't
a plan, but only a slogan. Jingos won't get us out of Bush's quagmire.

George W. Bush's incompetence, coupled with the rubber stamp Republicans
in Congress who are simply too weak, cowardly and corrupt to stand up to the
boss makes Democrats the only hope of a nation rebelling against the losers
in control of everything.

The false premise is that oppositions
win midterm elections by offering a clear program, such as the Republicans'
1994 Contract With America. I've been testing this idea with such architects
of the 1994 “Republican revolution” as former representative Vin
Weber and Tony Blankley, who was Newt Gingrich's top communications adviser
and now edits the Washington Times editorial page.

Both said the main contribution of the contract was
to give inexperienced Republican candidates something to say once the political
tide started moving the GOP's way. But both insisted that it was disaffection
with Bill Clinton, not the contract, that created the Republicans' opportunity
— something Bob Dole said at the time.

The
Democrats' Real Problem

Disaffection is wide spread with George W. Bush, but also Republicans
for good reason. They control everything but still they remain locked in inaction
on the one thing that was Bush's screw up from the beginning, Iraq.

The most desperate line uttered so far on Iraq came from Instapundit's
Reynolds, that is until Hinderaker took
out after John Murtha
.

“The press had better hope we win this war, because if we
don't, a lot of people will blame the media.”
Glenn
Reynolds

The media? The media is to blame for Iraq? They helped make his case from the beginning and didn't start questioning the incompetence until Murtha struck back.

After Hinderaker asked if Murtha was nuts, Think Progress got him cold, to which he replied with spittle.

One of the dimmest of the dimwitted left-wing web sites has tried
to respond to this post… Sadly, I think a great many liberals are this
stupid. Worse, I think that many liberals–like the proprietor of the hate
site…are so far gone in hatred of President Bush that everything they
say and do is said and done in bad faith. Like Jack Murtha, they have lost any
ability to distinguish truth from fiction, and any desire to do so.
John
Hinderaker

What John Murtha and other Democrats have done is be inordinately
patient, too patient for many, but patient. We waited and waited for “stay
the course” to be met with an actual plan, which it was not. Democrats
know the dangers in immediate withdrawal, so we have been biding our time, giving
President Bush and the Republicans controlling Congress a chance to come forward
with a way through Iraq to “victory.”

Democratic Party patience has been met by continued Bush and Republican
incompetence, more slogans, continual cowardly attacks, which are getting us
nowhere.

However, led by John Murtha one seemingly small, but monumental
thing has happened. President Bush and the Republicans were put on notice. Their
failures and ineptitude brought into the light and called what they are, weak
leadership from bumbling bureaucrats who have failed our troops, the country
and the Iraq people at every turn.

Democrats stopped the ad nauseam “victory” mantra. We
are now hashing out how to go forward.

What are President Bush and the Republicans doing? Selling our
national security to Dubai, and trying to provide each other with cover as they do it.

But Democrats stopped Dubai too. With Republicans in control of
everything, it's all we can do. It's not nothing. Just ask Newt.
