Into the Valley of Civil War
Tuesday was an apocalyptic day in Iraq. … Then real
disaster struck. The guerriillas blew up the domed Askariyah shrine in Samarra.
The shrine, sacred to Shiiites, honors 3 Imams or holy descendants of the
Prophet. They are Ali al-Hadi, Hasan al-Askari, and his disappeared son Muhammad
al-Mahdi. Thousands of Shiiites demonnstrated in Samarra and in East Baghdad,
against this desecration. Juan

The most revered Shiite mosque in Iraq had its "golden
dome" destroyed, setting off an "apocalyptic" day of violence
in the country. The mosque is known as the "Golden Mosque."

In the Shiite city of Basra, two Sunni mosques were then destroyed, which killed
an Imam, on the way to the political headquarters being destroyed.
Here's what President Bush had to say.
"The United States condemns this cowardly act
in the strongest possible terms," Mr. Bush said in Washington. "I
ask all Iraqis to exercise restraint in the wake of this tragedy, and to pursue
justice in accordance with the laws and constitution of Iraq."
No one is listening, least of all the Iraqis.
One report says Shiite cleric Muqtada al Sadr and his Mahdi Army are stirring
up much of the violence. While CNN
is reporting something else.
I still want to know why no one else seems to be covering this
story. Democrats, with the help of a Reagan man, deciding to offer a concrete
way forward and out of Iraq seems like news to me.
