Rush thinks Sherrod Brown is Black
(and other news)

DeLay was able to rejoin the powerful Appropriations
panel — he was a member until becoming majority leader in 2003 —
because of a vacancy created after the resignation of Randy \”Duke\”
Cunningham, R-Calif. Cunningham pleaded guilty in November to charges relating
to accepting $2.4 million in bribes for government business and other favors.

Lands Coveted Appropriations Spot

Sherrod Brown.
Does he look black to you?
Or was it his name, Rush?

Readers have been sending me emails on a couple of subjects that
are worth mentioning. One of my readers, Joe Beets, who knows a thing or two
about politics, emailed me about Tom Delay taking over where \”Duke\”
Cunningham left off on the Appropriations panel. This is a huge gift to a guy who's
been indicted. Talk about having your hand in the cookie jar. This is the panel
who decides how federal money is spent. But isn't Tommy in trouble for a money
laundering-type scheme? Yep. What else can we expect when the Republicans control
Congress.

On that note, Rep. Nancy Pelosi tried to pass ethics legislation
to go after the Washington corruption. She explained it her DailyKos
blog
. Oh, the legislation went down.

There's also the big news that Paul Hackett has pulled out of
politics, but most particularly the race this year, with Sherrod Brown taking
the Democratic spot. Lots of comments on this one. I've been a fan of Hackett
from the beginning. Loved his candor. But I must tell you it bothered the hell
out of me when he took so long deciding whether he'd run for Senate. From what
I can gather from the people who know, Sherrod Brown has earned his spot. But
I'm not the one to speak to this one. This post by Markos, Party
establishment and primaries
, is really worth a read. Here are a couple of
snippets.

It's true that the establishment lined
up behind Sherrod Brown — he has spent years building up his networks and
has a proven record people can embrace. Hackett didn't.

–snip–

And do we need to talk about Obama? Barack terrified
establishment Democrats because 1) he was black (which could've been an electoral
liability in downstate Illinois), 2) he had no money, and 3) his name was
easily confused with some other person's. At one point he had 2% in the polls,
yet somehow he managed to turn things around and defeat his cash-flushed opponents.
he didn't quit when the odds were stacked up against him.

So it can be done, and it has been done. The party
is not all powerful. In fact, it's pretty weak. That's been sort of the problem
for a long time.

I've saved the best for last. On an hilarious closing note, Rush
Limbaugh actually thought Sherrod Brown was black!
Here's the
audio
. No wonder only 2% of black Americans consider themselves Republican.
What an idiot. And I can't get back on radio? Incredible.
