Wingnuts for Mohammed Cartoon Campaign
As AAN editors and publishers try to determine
if this is an issue of free speech, religious intolerance or cultural misunderstanding,
many of them have become targets of at least one mass e-mail campaign calling
on them to publish the cartoons. RightMarch.com, a group formed in March 2003
“to counter the well-financed antics of radical left-wing groups like MoveOn.org”
seems to be the source of the majority of these e-mails. They recently published
an alert, “Support Freedom of the Press for ALL People: Tell the American
Media to Publish Danish Cartoons!” which asks people “to send YOUR
letters to local and national media, asking them to publish the cartoons in
solidarity with the people of free Europe and in support of the concept of freedom
of the press.” AAN
AAN just broke this story. So, helping to incite more violence is the way to go at the cartoon
controversy? It seems the wingnuts think so.
… … Even in Great Britain, things
have turned ugly. One protester, on the front page of many papers there today,
dressed up as a suicide bomber; some people were holding signs calling for
another 7/7 (when the subways & buses were bombed in London) or expressing
a desire for Europe to have its own 9/11; there was even a baby at a protest
with a hat that read, “I Love Al-Qaeda”!–snip–
Look, we can understand the indignation
of having your religion, and your religious leaders, portrayed in unflattering,
even blasphemous, ways by secularists in the mainstream media. It happens
to Christians ALL THE TIME in America and Europe. But indignation is NEVER an excuse for violence. And
threats of violence need to be *resisted* in free nations. And the best form
of resistance to Islamofascist threats here? PUBLISH THE CARTOONS. RightMarch.com
You've got to wonder what the Republicans have to gain on this
one. Let's remember, Muslims are the second largest religion in the world, so
what we're seeing is a small, radicalized segment of the population going wild. However,
if the wingnuts get more people to publish the cartoons, they're just inciting
more violence. Maybe that's their goal. After all, when radical Islamists are shown on
TV torching cities, Bush looks stronger, Terror Guy gets all puffed up, so he's able to show the people his one and only perceived strong suit,
fighting terrorism.
The Republicans never seem to waste an opportunity to divide. However, this campaign is deadly and could cost lives. But I guess anything goes in the efforts to prop up a sinking Republican party, not to mention a crumbling presidency.
